âRosie!? Jesus Christ, are you a pornstar now or something?â Melissa, in her full Zombie Juliet make-up, looks at me like Iâve completely lost my mind, but like sheâs also enjoying every second of it. I just shrug and smile. âWow, this is one of those times where Iâm glad weâve stayed friends this long.â
âPretty crazy, right?â
âItâs beyond crazy. Crazy is getting drunk and blowing a guy you donât really like. This â this they need to invent a whole new word for!â
Weâre backstage waiting for rehearsal to start. I just had the most exhausting practice of my life, and not because it was physically demanding, but because I had to go the entire day without telling my best friend what had happened during first period. I missed her at lunch and at break because she was doing theater stuff, and then I had to rush over to practice early because of some dispute over whether or not we should update the fringe on our uniforms. After everything thatâs just happened, I could honestly not care less.
Melissa leans in. Weâre in a dark corner by the light stands, but there are still people around. âSoâ¦you let himâ¦you knowâ¦in you?â
My eyes practically roll back in my head as I remember the experience. âOh my God, Melissa. It feels so good. But you must know that, youâve done it, right?â She just stares back at me. âRight?â
Then she shakes her head. âNo way. I donât need no babies.â
âBut youâre on the pill?â
âItâs ninety-nine percent, Rose. If Iâm going to be the next Jennifer Lawrence, I canât risk that point-one percent fucking me over. You really should go to the clinic and get some Plan-B.â
âYeahâ¦Iâm gonna.â
Lie. Big lie. And Melissa, who knows me all too well, sees right through me.
âYou are not. Youâre so not!â
âIsâ¦is that a bad thing?â
âBitch, what!?â she gasps. âYou want to have his fucking baby?!â
âI mean...â
âHoly shit, did he fuck the brains out of you?â
âWhat!?â I protest. âHeâs amazing, Melissa. You have no idea. And he cares about me.â
âWhat about college? Donât your parents want you to go to law school?â
Something snaps, and Iâm on my feet pacing back and forth. âSee, thatâs the issue, Liss. My parents want me to go to law school. My parents wanted me to do cheer. My mom thought it was so cool that I was dating the captain of the football team. I never really even liked Brad that much! For once, I just want to do something for myself. Something that makes me happy.â
âAnd you think settling down at eighteen with Coach Irons and having his babies will make you happy?â
I stop. Think. But only for a second. Thatâs all it takes.
âYes.â
Iâve never meant anything more in my life. I donât know how I know. I just do. Itâs one of those things you feel right down in your core. In your soul. When I picture a future alongside Coach Irons, Iâm not nervous about the future like I always am when I think about the responsibilities and expectations that have been placed on me.
