“Rosie!? Jesus Christ, are you a pornstar now or something?” Melissa, in her full Zombie Juliet make-up, looks at me like I’ve completely lost my mind, but like she’s also enjoying every second of it. I just shrug and smile. “Wow, this is one of those times where I’m glad we’ve stayed friends this long.”

“Pretty crazy, right?”

“It’s beyond crazy. Crazy is getting drunk and blowing a guy you don’t really like. This – this they need to invent a whole new word for!”

We’re backstage waiting for rehearsal to start. I just had the most exhausting practice of my life, and not because it was physically demanding, but because I had to go the entire day without telling my best friend what had happened during first period. I missed her at lunch and at break because she was doing theater stuff, and then I had to rush over to practice early because of some dispute over whether or not we should update the fringe on our uniforms. After everything that’s just happened, I could honestly not care less.

Melissa leans in. We’re in a dark corner by the light stands, but there are still people around. “So…you let him…you know…in you?”

My eyes practically roll back in my head as I remember the experience. “Oh my God, Melissa. It feels so good. But you must know that, you’ve done it, right?” She just stares back at me. “Right?”

Then she shakes her head. “No way. I don’t need no babies.”

“But you’re on the pill?”

“It’s ninety-nine percent, Rose. If I’m going to be the next Jennifer Lawrence, I can’t risk that point-one percent fucking me over. You really should go to the clinic and get some Plan-B.”

“Yeah…I’m gonna.”

Lie. Big lie. And Melissa, who knows me all too well, sees right through me.

“You are not. You’re so not!”

“Is…is that a bad thing?”

“Bitch, what!?” she gasps. “You want to have his fucking baby?!”

“I mean...”

“Holy shit, did he fuck the brains out of you?”

“What!?” I protest. “He’s amazing, Melissa. You have no idea. And he cares about me.”

“What about college? Don’t your parents want you to go to law school?”

Something snaps, and I’m on my feet pacing back and forth. “See, that’s the issue, Liss. My parents want me to go to law school. My parents wanted me to do cheer. My mom thought it was so cool that I was dating the captain of the football team. I never really even liked Brad that much! For once, I just want to do something for myself. Something that makes me happy.”

“And you think settling down at eighteen with Coach Irons and having his babies will make you happy?”

I stop. Think. But only for a second. That’s all it takes.

“Yes.”

I’ve never meant anything more in my life. I don’t know how I know. I just do. It’s one of those things you feel right down in your core. In your soul. When I picture a future alongside Coach Irons, I’m not nervous about the future like I always am when I think about the responsibilities and expectations that have been placed on me.
